The first successful experiment was performed by the Russian physicists in 1923. They proved that semiconductors can be utilized to accelerate fluctuations. But such devices as diodes that are utilized nowadays were invented significantly later. First transistor was developed in Bell's laboratory in 1949. That event impacted on the quick development of semiconductor devices. The intensive studying of the features of semiconductors was begun at the same time.
The concern to optical characteristics of semiconductors revived due to research of induced emission in semiconductors. By usage of such principles as p - n barriers and heterojunction scientists managed to design laser device in the beginning of the 60's.
